| Don't give candidates a free Fri, 13 Jun 2008 07:57:34 -0600 ride Published Thursday, June 12, 2008 in the WTE With Wyoming's pri- mary election just over two months away, politi- cians - incumbents and challengers - will be going door to door, cam- paigning for your vote. When they come knock- ing, don't let them off the hook. Ask tough questions and expect each candi- date to provide straight- forward answers. No mumbo jumbo allowed. Those difficult ques- tions - and demands for real answers - must be given to those running for Congress all the way down to Cheyenne City Council. The hottest race state- wide this summer will be among those vying for the seat held by U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo. She has announced that she is not seeking re- election due to her hus- band's illness, and that has prompted six candi- dates to throw their hats into the ring. Gary Trau- ner of Wilson is the lone Democrat, and W. David Herbert of Cody is the lone Libertarian. But there are four Republi- cans: Mark Gordon of Buffalo, Michael S. Hol- land of Green River, Cynthia Lummis of Chey- enne and Bill Winney of Bondurant. These candidates for federal office should be ready, willing and able to talk about issues that affect your life today and in the future. They should be forthcoming about Social Security, Medi- care, health-care insur- ance, the environment, energy and other issues related to Wyoming and its people. Tough questions also should be addressed even to those who don't have opponents in the primary and/or the general elec- tion in November. Don't give those candi- dates a pass. Cheyenne politicians like Sen. Tony Ross in State Senate District 4; Rep. Floyd Esquibel in State Senate District 8; Rep. Mary A. Throne in State House District 11; and Rep. Pete Illoway in House District 42 all are getting free rides into the Legislature because they have no opponents. But they need to be just as responsive to voters as those who are in tough races. If these men and women fail to get out and listen to voters and hear their concerns, then per- haps they have been in office for too long. Just because they already are elected doesn't mean voters don't care what they think or don't want to tell them what they would like to see accom- plished. Mr. Illoway needs to be asked the same tough questions that will be given to Rep. Lori Millin, D-Cheyenne, and Bob Nicholas, R-Cheyenne, in their contested race in House District 8. Don't treat Mr. Illoway and the other incumbents differ- ently just because they have no opponents. It is important to get all candidates on the record before they assume of- fice. That way they can't alter their positions for political reasons later on. Whether candidates face opponents or not, their constituents have every right to know what their public officials stand for - and why. And constituents can change the minds of those who visit. This summer politi- cians will be promising the sky to those who open their doors. Don't fall for it. Ask tough questions and expect straight- forward answers. You deserve at least that much. |
